So how do you solo travel Prague?
Prague is like one of those places you hear about and know almost nothing about until you see it and learn about it. I literally booked this trip extremely last minute, it was a major impulse decision to say the least! I solo traveled to Vienna, Austria on a last minute decision after taking a chance with Ryan Air while studying abroad in Italy. While I was looking into where to go, I realized Prague was like… right next-door. Kinda… anyways it was a train ticket for 35 Euros and a 5 hour train ride to get there but SO worth a quick 5 hour day visit to see Prague while solo traveling!

Solo Travel Prague
Weekend in Vienna Itinerary
SOOOOO in short, the best way I found to solo travel Prague was through taking a long weekend trip to Vienna, and spending a day trip in Prague from Vienna by taking the train. If you’re feeling bold and have a bit of a longer weekend than I did, you could likely find a safe AirBnB to stay at for the night to get a bit more time in to see the sights.
Say You have a 4 day weekend: Spend it like so:
Day 1) Fly into Vienna, get to your AirBnB (For an AMAZING reccomendation, see the sections below in this post.)
Day 2) See all of your walking sights
Day 3) Train to Prague, walking tour of Prague, Train back to Vienna (15 hour day but SO worth it!)
Day 4) Last sights of Vienna, fly back to where you are studying!
Train Vienna to Prague
So to get to Prague from Vienna is a lengthy train ride, but I promise you it is SO worth it if you have the chance to solo travel Prague. I recommend booking through Omio because it is SO easy to use and always reliable! This site was my BEST friend while studying abroad and traveling solo. It also helped me to get an idea of where things were relative to each other. The tickets round trip range anywhere from 32-65 Euros, it really depends on the time of day and not so much how fast you’ll get there! I was staying in Vienna near the main train station, and had the chance to stay at the BEST AirBnB there. It is maybe a 5 minute walk right across from the train station. The train is 4.5 hours long, so I would highly recommend leaving as early as possible and heading back as late as possible to be able to do a day trip to Prague! Of course, If you’re looking to stay overnight it is then up to you which train you choose.
Solo Travel Prague: Currency to USD or Euros
One really important thing to note if you choose to solo travel Prague is that Czeck Republic has its own currency and does NOT use Euros. Some places accept Euros, however, it is best to make sure you have a card on you so that you can pay for food and other things you may need while you are there. The currency used in Prague is “crowns”, so when you see prices on a menu you might see them being 300-500 crowns for a meal, which roughly is about $12-$15 USD.
Places to Stay to Solo Travel Prague
Of course, if you solo travel Prague and want to see more of it in your weekend trip, finding a safe place to stay overnight in Prague is KEY. Always be sure to read the reviews thoroughly, and don’t budget too hard if you’re concerned about safety. It is SO worth spending a little bit more for safety especially in a city so different from the rest of Europe! Here are my top 5 recommendations based on comments, experiences, and location in Prague. I personally have not stayed overnight in Prague, so I am NOT an expert, but please be sure to do your own research before deciding where to stay as things can change overtime! My recommendations are all close to Old Town Prague where most of the sights to see are located near by.

Places to Stay in Vienna
In Vienna, I stayed in one of the BEST AirBnb’s ever. This place was so easy to get into and was super affordable and extremely valuable for the price. This AirBnb came with a kitchenette, bed, fridge, closet, and very spacious bathroom. It is extremely safe and in an even safer area just 5 mins across the street from the main train station! It is also located in a really unique building, you can’t miss it when you walk out of the train station! It cost $43 a night. Seriously. You can’t beat that, especially for solo travel! Click HERE to book the exact AirBnb! It is perfect to be able to solo travel Prague AND visit Vienna conveniently.
Solo Travel Prague: What to See
So if you are headed to Prague for a day trip just to walk around and see all of the unique historical architecture (which is so worth it on its own) you’ll want to see everything from the outside. There are a few things you can go inside to see, but for the most part the best of it is outside. There are SO many sights to see for free while walking around in Prague! The city itself is a UNESCO World Heritage site, because there is SO much to see and a TON of history in the town center.
1. Charles Bridge
When you solo travel Prague, you’ll end up walking across the Charles Bridge, especially if you are headed to visit the castle. This bridge construction started in 1357 under King Charles IV, and finished in the early 15th century. There is a lot to see while walking across the bridge, be sure to pay attention while you’re on it! It is also a great bridge to take scenic photos from, and you’ll see plenty of unique architecture along the way.
2. Astronomical Clock
Located in the main town center square in Prague is the famous astronomical clock. You SO have to stay to watch this chime at the hour. There are so many moving parts to see when it chimes, and will certainly make your solo travel Prague adventure 10x more memorable! If you are traveling during peak tourism seasons, be sure to watch your belongings near the hour and avoid pick pocketers. I visited in mid November and had zero issues or concerns with this.
3. Powder Tower
The powder tower is something you will absolutely stumble across while you solo travel Prague. This tower is one of the original gates that separated the old town from new town Praha (Prague). A must see on your walking tour through Prague!
4. Church of Our Lady before Týn
One of the COOLEST things to see while I decided to solo travel Prague was this church. As soon as I saw this I immediately knew I’d have zero regrets visiting Prague, even if it was only for 5 hours. Walking through Prague was so interesting, because the wow feeling I had seeing this continued at just about every turn in the city! The front and back of this are a MUST see, so be sure to walk around a LOT nearby this to see it from all angles!
5. Walk and Explore
Most importantly while you solo travel Prague… just explore. Look around. This entire city is a World Heritage Site, there is ALWAYS something insanely cool to see and explore. This is a trip you can totally do and solo travel Prague. As a study abroad student on a budget it is also totally possible. Below is a gallery of just a few of the sights I saw while walking around.
This post was all about how to Solo Travel Prague as a solo traveler or study abroad student! See Vienna, and spend a day visiting Prague. Even if you only visit for 5 hours, it is SO worth it and you won’t regret it. I hope this helps you get an idea of how possible it is to do safely and on a budget!
