Visiting Prague
Prague is located in the Czech Republic, bordering Austria, Germany, Poland, and Slovakia. If you are visiting any cities close to Czech Republic, I’d highly recommend making that your trip and add Prague as a weekend excursion! There is so much to see and take in (could be a day trip if on a budget and a student) but to truly get the full experience I’d recommend staying at least one night.
When I personally went to Prague, I was studying abroad in Italy visiting Vienna, Austria and took a 5 hour train to Prague. If you are visiting Nuremberg, Germany, or Wroclaw, Poland check to see if this train option is available to you! Certainly possible as a day trip but it a very short day in Prague. SO worth it to see the incredibly historic gothic architecture.
Things to Do in Prague
1. Charles Bridge
When you solo travel Prague, you’ll end up walking across the Charles Bridge, especially if you are headed to visit the castle. This bridge construction started in 1357 under King Charles IV, and finished in the early 15th century. There is a lot to see while walking across the bridge, be sure to pay attention while you’re on it! It is also a great bridge to take scenic photos from, and you’ll see plenty of unique architecture along the way.
2. Astronomical Clock
Located in the main town center square in Prague is the famous astronomical clock. You SO have to stay to watch this chime at the hour. There are so many moving parts to see when it chimes, and will certainly make your solo travel Prague adventure 10x more memorable! If you are traveling during peak tourism seasons, be sure to watch your belongings near the hour and avoid pick pocketers. I visited in mid November and had zero issues or concerns with this.
3. Powder Tower
The powder tower is something you will absolutely stumble across while you solo travel Prague. This tower is one of the original gates that separated the old town from new town Praha (Prague). A must see on your walking tour through Prague!
4. Church of Our Lady before Týn
One of the COOLEST things to see while I went on my solo Prague travel adventure was this church. As soon as I saw this I immediately knew I’d have zero regrets visiting Prague, even if it was only for 5 hours. Walking through Prague was so interesting, because the wow feeling I had seeing this continued at just about every turn in the city! The front and back of this are a MUST see, so be sure to walk around a LOT nearby this to see it from all angles!
Prague Hidden Gems
Walk and Explore
Most importantly on your solo Prague travel adventure… just explore. Look around. This entire city is a World Heritage Site, there is ALWAYS something insanely cool to see and explore. This is a trip you can totally do and solo travel Prague. As a study abroad student on a budget it is also totally possible. Below is a gallery of just a few of the sights I saw while walking around.
Prague Travel Tips
1. Prague Currency
One really important thing to note if you choose to solo travel Prague is that Czeck Republic has its own currency and does NOT use Euros. Some places accept Euros, however, it is best to make sure you have a card on you so that you can pay for food and other things you may need while you are there. The currency used in Prague is “crowns”, so when you see prices on a menu you might see them being 300-500 crowns for a meal, which roughly is about $12-$15 USD.
2. Train to Prague
As mentioned before, I found that is was cheaper to just take a train from a city that I visited at the same time at Prague to get the most out of your time while seeing Prague. For this trip, I stayed in Vienna and took a train to Prague. A great option for solo traveling.
I was staying in Vienna near the main train station, and had the chance to stay at the BEST AirBnB there. It is maybe a 5 minute walk right across from the train station. The train is 4.5 hours long, so I would highly recommend leaving as early as possible and heading back as late as possible to be able to do a day trip to Prague! Of course, If you’re looking to stay overnight it is then up to you which train you choose.
So to get to Prague from Vienna is a lengthy train ride, but I promise you it is SO worth it if you have the chance to solo travel Prague. I recommend booking through Omio because it is SO easy to use and always reliable! This site was my BEST friend while studying abroad and traveling solo.
It also helped me to get an idea of where things were relative to each other. The tickets round trip range anywhere from 32-65 Euros, it really depends on the time of day and not so much how fast you’ll get there!
3. Places to Stay in Prague
Of course, if you solo travel Prague and want to see more of it in your weekend trip, finding a safe place to stay overnight in Prague is KEY. Always be sure to read the reviews thoroughly, and don’t budget too hard if you’re concerned about safety. It is SO worth spending a little bit more for safety especially in a city so different from the rest of Europe! Here are my top 5 recommendations based on comments, experiences, and location in Prague. I personally have not stayed overnight in Prague, so I am NOT an expert, but please be sure to do your own research before deciding where to stay as things can change overtime! My recommendations are all close to Old Town Prague where most of the sights to see are located near by.
- Entire Rental Unit Hosted by Vadim
- This unit is extremely affordable at 53 Euros a night, is safe and has great reviews.
- Entire Rental Unit Hosted by Ondrej
- This one is a great option if you don’t mind sharing with a few others in the common area spaces!
- Entire Rental Unit Hosted by Michael & Michael
- This is a more expensive option, but offers a patio balcony to enjoy a view of the castle!
- Private Room in Rental Unit Hosted by Honzik
- This is another great affordable option to solo travel Prague that is closer to the train station if you are looking for an option to get closer to the train station where you’re staying!
- Little Garden “Up”
- This is a cute and unique little place with great reviews and in a safe place in Prague. Affordable for a one night stay!
This post was all about how to best tackle a solo Prague travel experience! Visit a major bordering city, and spend a day or two visiting Prague. Even if you only visit for 5 hours, it is SO worth it and you won’t regret it. I hope this helps you get an idea of how possible it is to do safely and on a budget!
