Want to visit Pompeii on your vacation to Italy but want to know how to get there? This guide on a Pompeii day trip from Rome will share how! Take a day trip to Pompeii from Rome by train to have the chance to see Pompeii while in Italy. Truly an unforgettable experience and one of the most humbling sights to see in the world.
POMPEII DAY TRIP FROM ROME
Rome to Pompeii Train
The best way to see Pompeii while on your trip to Italy is by taking a day trip by train from Pompeii to Rome. The cost of the train to get from Rome to Pompeii is around 53 Euros ($55 USD), and will of course vary depending on when you go and what time of day you prefer. The train takes anywhere from 2.5 – 4.5 hours depending on which train you take. I personally recommend taking the fastest one, it is so worth the money to get to where you need to be in time! And of course, make sure you take the earliest and latest trains that work best for you! You’ll want to spend as much time as you can exploring Pompeii, you could totally spend an entire day in the park.
When booking your train from Rome to Pompeii, be sure to take a look at the transfer times and locations! You will need to transfer trains, as there are no direct trains from Rome to Pompeii. Be sure to leave at least 30 mins. between trains to be sure you do not miss your second train.
The best transfer locations would be either in Naples Centrale, or Salerno! If you want a safer option, visit Salerno and see if you can get an hour transfer. I did this and got to walk around the area, it was beautiful! You are also able to look out at the ocean when you visit. It is about a 5 minute walk from the train station! If you are traveling alone, be extra aware if you are transferring trains in Naples. It is a bit less safe in the area, so be alert while at the train station.
Pompeii Tickets
When it comes to visiting Pompeii and seeing the archaeological site, there are many options for which tickets to buy depending on your interests and preferences. Personally, I like going and just exploring at my own pace, and then learning more about it before or after my trip. However, I also enjoy having the option to have a guide show me around, and then explore on my own afterwards. If you like taking photos, you may want to have time to go at your own pace. Either way, you can’t go wrong with what you choose! Seeing and walking where Pompeii once was a lively city is an unforgettable experience.

Pompeii Restaurants
Of course after visiting Pompeii, you are going to be hungry for a later lunch! Below are some recommendations for where to eat in Pompeii. A lot of the options for places to eat include food stands outside the site. I chose to eat at a restaurant in the train station that was delicious! The top rated restaurant is Pompeii Scavi Café and is located within the walls of the park. If you wait until after your visit, grab a delicious panino outside at one of the food carts lining the entrance/exits. They are all delicious!
Pompeii Mt. Vesuvius Hike
If you are feeling really adventurous and have the time, be sure to check out the hike to see the volcano up close! This is located at Mt. Vesuvius National Park and can be accessed by taking a bus about 15 minutes walk into the city of Pompeii. This hike lets you take a bus up to where the hole is to see the volcano that erupted and destroyed Pompeii. The trail is 2.5 miles, and takes around 2 hours, or more depending on how long you’d like to take!
