PACKING TRAVEL HACKS
1. File Your Clothes
So I know… everyone RAVES about packing cubes. Personally, I think they actually inhibit your ability to use all of the available space in your bags! I’ve started filing clothing in my suitcases like the image below and it has allowed me to save SO much space and pack so much more room! This packing travel hack will seriously prove to be a life saver.
2. Organize Small Items
Next packing travel hack I have for you: packing cubes are my enemy sure, but when it comes to all your smaller items such as cords, makeup, toiletries, etc. I’ve found it is necessary that they have their own kind of bag or organization system. Packing can be overwhelming to make sure you can find everything you need when you get to your destination, and this makes it so much easier to find the things you’ll need right away!
3. Pack a Smart Carryon
One of the most important packing travel hacks I always recommend is never checking a bag unless you absolutely have to! However, if you are checking luggage, be sure to pack a SMART carryon. Inside your carryon if checking a bag you should ALWAYS have the following:
- change of clothes
- travel toiletries bag (toothbrush, shower items, etc.)
- medicine
- chargers
- snacks
- wallet
Never ever ever check anything valuable in a checked bag…. ever. Don’t do it. Don’t check ashes, electronics, medicine, anythingggg because you never know what could happen to your bag.
4. Label + Track Checked Baggage
If checking a bag and you want to have less stress and worry about it, add a TILE or Apple Tag to your bag to make sure you know where it is if it gets lost! This is a really great packing travel hack to do especially if flying internationally. The last thing you want to do is lose your bag in another country!
5. Buy a Luggage Scale
If you have to check bags frequently, this is the tool you MUST invest in! This has saved me from so many headaches at the airport. Traveling internationally made this a total life saver. Who wants to get to the airport and NOT know what your bag weighs? The last thing anyone wants to do is shuffle items to make the weight work IN the airport. Save time and headache by getting a luggage scale.
6. Packing Necklaces
Jewelry can be a pain to pack. There are so many organizers, however, they tend to be bulky and take up a ton of space. The best thing to do is to use a straw to thread necklaces through to prevent tangling, and throw all of your jewelry in a zip loc bag! Best packing travel hack ever if you like to be stylish and pack accessories for vacations!
7. Don’t Buy “Lockable” Luggage
If you were looking into buying luggage that is lockable to travel with, don’t. These can easily be broken into through the zipper!

8. Make a List
ALWAYS make a list of the most important items you’ll need traveling. This is SO SO important to ensure you won’t forget anything on your trip! Have a list of things to grab the morning of your travels to also make sure you won’t forget anything after sleeping 🙂
9. Have a Reasonably Sized Carryon
As long as your bag doesn’t look HUGE, you will be able to bring just about any carryon on the plane. All it has to do is fit on the plane in the overhead compartments! Here are a few bags I recommend investing in for your carryon!
10. Take Advantage of Personal Item Space Allowance
This is especially important when traveling internationally, for study abroad, or to move! As long as your personal item can fit under the seat in front of you, it is allowed! Take advantage if you need extra room, and pack a larger personal item! Below is the bag I recommend using.
11. Dirty Laundry Bag
Always essential for packing to keep your dirty clothes from your clean clothes! Keep a dirty laundry bag in your suitcase to throw laundry in on your trip.
12. Invest in Travel Clothing Pieces
If you travel often or are going on a long trip, it is so worth investing in pieces that travel and pack well! Many brands are focusing on developing packable versatile pieces for travel. It is SO much easier to have travel pieces in your suitcase so that you can maximize your space! It may also be worth investing in a travel capsule wardrobe that can be mixed and matched into multiple outfits with only a few key pieces.
13. Invest in a Collapsable Water Bottle
Do it. Saving a TON of space!
14. Keep a Pre-Packed Travel Toiletries Bag
What better scenario than already having a toiletry bag packed for you when packing for a trip? Keep a bag on hand that is designated just for travel to throw in with your bags when packing for a trip complete with all the essentials you’ll need!
15. Be TSA Ready
Don’t be that person who everyone stares at through TSA. You know the drill. They’re going to likely have you take out larger electronics, take off shoes, belts, put you through a metal detector, check ID and ticket, etc. Dress for TSA. Wear easily slip on and off shoes, have your take out items ready and easily available, and carry your phone and ID close by and easily accessible. This not only helps YOU get through faster, but also helps keep lines short at the airport!
16. Keep Flight Items in Personal Item Bag
Nobody wants to get up and dig in the overhead bins in the middle of the flight. Keep all the items you’ll need during your flight in your personal item bag. (See tip 10)
17. Invest in a Passport/ID Holder Wallet for Travel
This is something that is more than worth investing in. One of the BEST packing travel hacks I can recommend. This helps with tip #15, having necessary items readily available at security in the airport! It is also great if packing to move on a road trip, as you’ll have a place for all of your important documents.
