Got a small closet but a huge obsession with clothes? Do not fear. This post is all about the top tips to small clothing closet organization. Whether you’re a minimalist and have just enough to fit in the closet, or you’re like me and need 5 suitcases to go abroad with clothes, this post will benefit you greatly.
To best start this project of organizing, my best tip is to take EVERYTHING out of your closet to start fresh, and only put back in what you NEED in there. Anything that doesn’t belong has a place somewhere else. The only way now to truly get a great start on this project is by getting rid of stuff you don’t need!
GO THROUGH YOUR CLOTHES!
I know. Basic, yet the most intimidating task of all. Find out what you actually wear, Marie Kondo it, use the backwards hanger trick, whatever you need to do to get rid of the random clothes you literally NEVER wear. You know EXACTLY which pieces come to mind right now. I know you do…. if not (lies) get a friend or family member to help you out and ask their advice on what to keep, it makes it so much more enjoyable! Less painful and lonely (lol).
The most important thing is that you want to rid of any clothes that either don’t fit or that you don’t love or wear often. This will give you so much more space for the clothes you do love, and make it easier to find your best outfits! For more advice on what to keep in your wardrobe see my post, “How to Create a Cute Minimal Wardrobe“
If you’re not sure on some, or have that unrealistic hope that “maybe someday it’ll fit” make a box literally for these pieces. If you don’t think about them or fit into them in the next year, then it’s time to take the box. I know. HUGE sad… but it’s best for your overall sanity and wellness.
Create a System… Categorize, Color Code…
The best way to start organizing your closet is by implementing a system and sticking to it. Doing this makes you more aware of what you’ve got in your closet, and can help make it easier to create stylish looks every day! PRO FASHION TIP: Out of sight out of mind. Make it possible to see your options that you can put together.
Now that you know what clothes you actually wear and are going to keep in your closet, come up with a system that works for you when you put away your “KEEP” pile.
If you like organizing your clothes by color, you can start by making piles of each different color and sort them that way. Another great way is to organize by type of clothing. I personally go this route, as it is easier to find what I need when getting ready. Here’s a list of each section in my closet: (I know… crazy long. I’m weird ok?)
- Plain colored tanks
- Patterned tanks
- Plain colored tops
- Stylized tops
- Long-sleeve plain tops
- Stylized long sleeve tops
- Sweaters
- Jackets
- Coats
- Hoodies
- Skirts
- Pants
- Dresses
- Other
I have found that organizing by type worked for me, and I’ve stuck with it for years! I’ve been doing this probably since I was in middle school. When you have all of the clothes organized, it creates a much nicer look and it’s easier to find what you love!
Additional Hacks
Ok so now you got the clothes organized. That’s great, but what about the BEST part…. the accessories? The shoes, the purses, wallets, scarves, jewelry…. it has to have a place somehow! Small clothing closet organization makes this even more of a challenge but it’s all about being strategic. 🙂
1. Have a Bin For Each Accessory
In your small clothing closet, have one bin allowed for each type of accessory you have whether it be purses, shoes, hats, scarves, wallets, or belts. STICK TO JUST THIS BIN. I KNOW. Rules are sucky and you’ll want to keep EVERYTHING because “what if one day” but this will help you to keep your small clothing closet organization in check. Limit yourself to owning only what the bin can fit. USE THE SWAP METHOD! If you want something new that won’t fit in your bin, swap it for something you no longer need or want. This will make it possible to not have excess clutter in your closet.
2. Keep a Donation Bin Handy
You know those mornings… the ones where you try on like 50 things and none of them work for you and they end up ALL OVER the floor? Yeah. Me too! If you throw something on constantly and hate it every time… throw it in a bin. Small clothing closet organization calls for a DONATION BIN. Or as I like to call it Dani’s rejects…. is that too harsh? LOL.
Whether it’s when you use the swap method after buying something new, or try something on you don’t want to keep, this donation bin is essential to small clothing closet organization. It’s so easy to forget what you planned to get rid of if you don’t consistently keep mindful of it. If you’re like me, you’re often so busy you don’t have time to go through the sucky clothes and need something that is ready to go for you. When the bin gets full, go through this bin and donate what you need to get rid of. If you’re really bold just take it and go! The work had already been done for you. This provides an easy way for you to keep organized without putting in too much effort.
3. Implement Shelving and Storage Space
I know, I know, this one is kinda obvious and self explanatory but it’s a MUST for small clothing closet organization. There are plenty of affordable, budget friendly ways to find shelving for your closet. I personally have the ClosetMaid shelving system. This one allows you to move around the shelves when you need to re-arrange your space to best fit your needs. Here is a link from Amazon:
